Doleshwor and Sanga Day Tour

Doleshwor and Sanga Day Tour is one of our special pilgrimage tours that offers a visit to the holy Hindu temple of Doleshwor along with world’s tallest Shiva statue at Sanga. With both sites located in close proximity (25km or less) to the capital, this is a very accessible tour that is performed as a day tour. This tour is particularly popular during the month of Shrawan (July - August), as that period is regarded as quite holy to worship Lord Shiva.

Doleshwor holds a lot of importance among Hindu devotees as it is one of the holiest temples of Lord Shiva. It was declared as the head of Kedarnath by the head priest of Kedarnath temple in 2009. This knowledge was not available to the common people for the last 4,000 years, but after the declaration, the temple has been rising in popularity.  Similarly, the Kailashnath Mahadev temple at Sanga, which houses the world’s tallest statue to Lord Shiva, is another temple that is rising in popularity. The statue, standing at a staggering 43 meters tall, is the second highest Hindu statue in the world.

To reach either of these sites, you need to drive along the Araniko Highway up to Suryabinayak, which is located around 20km from central Kathmandu. From here on, you can continue for another half hour (10km) to Sanga or take a right turn for the uphill drive to Doleshwor. Hiking is also an option, as the Doleshwor Mahadev temple is located around 1.5 hours away by foot. Either way, travelling past the archaic settlements of Bhaktapur or eventually reach the temples amidst the lush nature and landscape is going to be an enjoyable experience.

Following our itinerary, we will first head to Doleshwor. The Doleshwor Mahadev temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. More particularly, it venerates the incarnation of Lord Shiva known as Kedarnath. According to Hindu legends and religious texts, the Pandavs wandered the Himalayas to take responsibility for all the casualties during Kurukshetra war of Mahabharat and ask forgiveness from Shiva. However, Lord Shiva decided not to avoid them so easily and took the form of a bull. The Pandavas soon realized that, and tried to catch the bull but in doing so, they split the bull into pieces which spread out and landed in different parts around the Himalayas. One of those parts, the head, is known as Doleshwor. Witness all these fascinating myths and legends up-close in real life will certainly be an interesting experience for foreigners, while it will be a fulfilling one for religious tourists.

Sanga may not have the same level of fascinating myths and legends behind it but it has its own charm. It houses the highest statue of Lord Shiva in the world, standing at 43.5m tall. The statue’s construction began in 2003, and took 7 years to complete. It attracts around 5,000 visitors on any given day, with the numbers rising even higher during the weekends.

The Doleshwor and Sanga Day Tour is an easy tour that can be performed for most of the year. As the main focus is religious pilgrimage and not sightseeing or scenery, weather and season isn’t a major concern. What’s more important is choosing the right time for spiritual purposes. The month of Shrawan (July – August), and particularly the Teej and Shivaratri festivals are the best times to visit these temples, as well as any other Shiva temples.
